Feburary 2004
One week before Newtown play O'Loughlin Gaels in the All-Ireland club semi final
the new floodlights have been installed. What a magnificent slight to see state of the art floodlights
installed in our new pitch. These light are similar to those used in Pairc Ui Rinn, and have been
given universal approval from all the players. Thanks to everyone involved in making this possible, the future looks bright indeed !!

November 2003 On the Eve of Newtown's First Munster Club title
the new field is really beginning to take shape. The wiring around the perimeter of the field has been completed, a
railing around the perimeter of the playing pitch is looking great and the walkway around the perimeter of the complete
site is also well under way. Nets have been put in place behind both goals and goal posts are arriving shortly.
The pitch itself has received rave reviews from the players, comparing it to no less a surface as Semple Statium,
Thurles. A special thanks to Wesley Burke for taking these shots.

June 2003 Nine months after the seeds were sown, we now have a
fabelous looking playing sufrace ready to play on.
The field is currently being wired off and Goalposts
will be next on the agenda. -

September 2002 - Over the past number of weeks work has
continued in the development of our 3rd playing pitch. Having replaced all the
top soil for the playing surface, a series of drains were laid to take away
surface water as quickly as possible. When these were completed, 75mm of
dead sand was then placed on top of all the playing surface.
On Wednesday 18th September, 30 bags of grass seeds were evenly distributed
on top of the sand. Photos..
7th August 2002 - The brighter weather of August has seen great activity in the development of the club's new playing field. If the current spell of fine weather continues until the middle of the month, there is every likelihood that the earthworks will reach completion. This would then allow for the planting of grass seeds on what can only be described as an exceptionally spacious field. A visit to the field is a must for anyone who wishes to see this latest venture by the club as it seeks to provide for the teams of the future by developing additional playing space.
The main task facing the earthworks contractor was to turn a sloped field into a level surface. Several months ago topsoil from the field was removed and placed at the edges of the field. Thousands of tons of sub-soil were then moved from the southern side of the field to the lower northern section. While poor weather conditions earlier in the year did delay the work, the topsoil is now being replaced upon the re-graded surface. One excavator, two tractors and trailers as well as a bulldozer are working steadily towards completing the work.
When the topsoil has been evenly spread over the entire area, the contractors will then begin laying the new drainage system that will help to ensure that the playing surface will be of the highest quality. A number of main drains will be laid and connected to these will be slit drains, spaced just one meter from each other. The final touches will then be added with the mixing of sand with the surface soil to ensure optimum drainage conditions. Locals who have seen the large quantities of sand and pea-gravel that are currently heaped at various points of the grounds can easily appreciate the scale of the drainage system that will be stitched together under the playing surface.
A reflection of the modern times in which we live in is that the gradient of the field is being adjusted with the aid of a laser level. Without even getting down from the machine, the driver is guided by an electronic sensor mounted on the blade of the bulldozer which allows great accuracy in laying out a smooth playing surface.
We all look forward to seeing fresh grass emerging on the new field and seeing our young players practicing the skills of the game that is so much a part of our lives.
