Minors Show Great Heart

The Vale Star

Newtownshandrum 1-14
Erin's Own 2-9

The minor hurlers showed great heart and commitment in fashioning a two point success over Erin's Own at Fermoy last Wednesday night in the Premier Minor Championship clash.

Unfancied in many quarters, they took this game to their opponents who were going for three titles in a row. The old cliche of this being a team peformance was very true on this occasion. From Stephen Kelleher in goal to Jeffrey Watson at corner forward, every one of the lads played their heart out on a night when one of Newtown's greats, Charlie Hawe R.I.P. was being brought to the Church. The game could not be altered so it was difficult for players and supporters alike in the circumstances.

Nevertheless, on behalf of the GAA we express our thanks to all those people who formed the guard of honour for Charlie's remains. No doubt his spirit was willing on these young lads in Fermoy.

Team:
Stephen Kelleher, John Buckley, Patrick O'Leary, Eamon O'Connor, Frederick Young, W O'Connor, S Moran, William Biggane 0-8, Mick O'Sullivan 0-1, G O'Mahony, Willie O'Mahony 0-1, Diarmuid Lane 0-1, J Reidy, J Bowles 1-3, J Watson.
Subs used: S Quilty, J O'Brien
