The changing of the guard

When Midleton were winning county, provincial and All-Ireland club titles in the 1980's, Newtownshandrum were strutting their stuff in the junior grade in North Cork.

Much has changed in the interim period and now the shoe is very much on the opposite foot as they prepare to do battle on Sunday night in the fourth round of the the permanent tsb Cork Co SHC.

Midleton no longer occupy the exalted spot they once held while Newtown are very much the new kids on the block, having supped from the victory chalice just over 12 months ago.

Fitzgerald Park in Fermoy awaits them both on Sunday night and all the smart money will be on Tom Ryan's team.

But Midleton boss John Fenton is not without hope and will be looking to a decent blend of youth and experience to set his side up for what would be a shock victory.

"Newtown are favourites, in fact they and Blackrock are the leading two club teams in my book for the county", he said.

"We have a few injury worries and won't decide until the last minute on the availability of a few players," said Fenton.
