Newtownshandrum Club News 2003

Newtownshandrum 0-14 Glen Rovers 0-13

Despite the fact that Newtown were missing a number of players through injury, they collected full points at the Glen Fields on Sunday.

Newtown's list of walking wounded was bad enough before today with James Bowles out for up to 6 weeks with a broken thumb and John Paul King recovering from a fractured toe, to make matters worst Pat Mulcahy was nursing a dead leg while Ben O'Connor picking up a nasty leg injury against Derry earlier that day.

All this makes this victory more impressive than the score line might suggest and while it is hoped that these players will resume full fitness as soon as possible, it gives those on the fringes of the team an opportunity to make an impression.

Playing with the wind, the Glen went into a 0-7 to a 0-1 lead after 20 minutes and at this stage it looks ominous for Newtown but they slowly settled down with the full back line of John McCarthy, Brendan Mulcahy and Alan 'Hiya' O'Brien particularly impressive.

Newtown lost Gerdy O'Mahony before half time with a back injury.

Newtown began to hurl with more authority in the second half and some fine points from Philip Noonan (solid throughout), John O'Connor and Gerry O'Connor gave Newtown their first points of this league campaign

The only negative of the day is that with the championship just over 8 weeks away, the mounting injuries are a serious cause for concern.
