Newtown gears up for St. Patricks Day date with destiny

Newtownshandrum parish is gearing up for a St. Patrick's Day celebration to beat all celebrations, as the local club prepares for an historic All Ireland Club Hurling Final showdown versus Dunloy of Antrim in Croke Park.

In order to offset the considerable costs of the club's big day out, a Senior Hurling Training Fund has been set up and the public is asked to forward donations to club officers as soon as possible in order to ensure that no stone is left unturned in Newtown's efforts to bring the All Ireland title back to North Cork.

After the thrill-a-minute drawn semi-final last Sunday week, suporters made the return trip to Semple last Saturday hoping that the team hadn't left their big chance behind them, but they needn't have worried as their heroes never looked in danger of losing and eventually eased away from O'Loughlin Gaels to win by three points 0-14 to 1-8.

The O'Connor twins Ben and Jerry were once again to the fore in the win, but there were many stars in this great team performance and it is safe to say that this is a team of all talents, with the ability to go all the way! So a date with destiny beckons on St. Patrick's Day, normally an occasion for parades, but the only parade on Newtown people's minds is the one with the All Ireland cup!

To contribute to the Newtown Training Fund, please contact Chairman Christy (087) 6617977, Matt (086)8387602 or Peter (086) 8535782.
