Family day out for O'Connors

SATURDAY will be a busy day for the O'Connor household of Newtownshandrum as Paula lines out for the Cork seniors against Limerick in the Foras na Gaeilge championship while her twin brothers Ben and Jerry take the field with the Cork hurlers against Tipperary in Killarney.

"It is great to have the two games together on Saturday, one thing for certain we will not be having to make phone calls at half-time as we did two years ago when the clash of fixtures took place," explained mum Kathleen.

Saturday is also an historic day for Cumann Camógaiochta na nGael as it will be the first time a senior intercounty championship match will have gone ahead in Fitzgerald Stadium. 2002 All-Ireland champions Cork will start as favorites to overcome Limerick who suffered a harsh defeat two weeks ago at the hands of Wexford.

Cork manager John Considine is confident that he can take on Wexford in the third round without having dropped a point. His only concern at the moment is that all the players will come through the Cork senior championship unscathed.

Limerick will need a massive improvement from their defeat by Wexford if they are to trouble Cork.

Meanwhile, Wexford will face Kildare in the Leinster Junior championship final also on Saturday in Wexford Park. The Lilywhites will be hoping for repeat performances from Susie O'Carroll (16) who has impressed this year. If herself and Clodagh Flanagan hit form they could give the Model County defence a hard time.

However, Wexford will have several experienced players available such as Evelyn Quigley, daughter of former hurler Dan, and fourteen-year-old Ciara Storey, daughter of Wexford legend Martin.

A 35-strong touring party of camogie/hurling shinty players will arrive into Dublin Airport tomorrow from Scotland and they will play several matches against Dublin clubs, before attending the Guinness Hurling championship match between Galway and Kilkenny on Sunday in Semple Stadium. These matches are in preparation for their trip to Ireland in October when the Camogie/Shinty compromise games go ahead.

Gowran will be the venue on Friday as the girls' Golf classic takes place. Sponsored by the Aghadoe Heights Hotel, Killarney, Kilkenny Ormonde Hotel, and the Radisson SAS Hotel, Galway it will include some of the great camogie players past and present as well as GAA President Seán Kelly and the former Tipperary hurler manager Michael Cleary. The Irish Sport's Council team will include former Irish International soccer player Niall Quinn.

Tyrone GAA this year played their part in recognising the centenary when the Senior and Intermediate county finals were held last Sunday in O'Neill Park.

The senior final ended in a win for Eglish who by defeating Clonoe 3-6 to 1-9 won their 34th county title. For Tattyreagh, who won the Intermediate championship it was almost a rag to riches story as last season they folded up but reformed again this year.

Wexford hurlers Michael and Rory Jacob may feel just a little under pressure from younger sister Ursula who has already won a Colleges All-Star this year as well as a senior All-Ireland colleges medal.
