Galway through after clash
with Shannonsiders

Galway 1-15
Limerick 1-10

Galway, who many see as destined to reach Croke Park on September 15, were made to fight for their semi-final spot by Limerick in Ballingarry.

When both sides met earlier in the league final Galway were well in command. But on Saturday (3rd August 2002), Limerick's defence did not allow the Galway forwards the same scope. The only Galway goal came in the fourth minute of the second half from Lourda Kavanagh as a result of an unfortunate mistake by Limerick corner-back Michelle Casey.

Limerick then hit their best patch when the great stylist Eileen O'Brien sent over 0-4 before Marie Keating crashed the ball to the Galway net. With nine minutes remaining Galway led 1-12 to 1-8. Both sides exchanged further points, the last score of the game fell to substitute Orla Kilkenny.

Scorers:
Galway: L Kavanagh 1-2, S Glynn 0-7, A Connolly 0-3, C Murray 0-2, O Kilkenny 0-1.
Limerick: M Keating 1-1, E O'Brien 0-7, A O'Connell, A Sheehan 0-1 each.

Galway: L Curry, R Broderick, O Broderick, P Nevin, M Haverty, T Laheen, M Harkin, A Hardiman, A Hilary, C Murray, M Flynn, L Kavanagh, A Connolly, S Glynn, D Gilligan.

Tipperary 7-15
Wexford 0-10

Tipperary booked themselves a place in the Foras Na Gaeilge All Ireland Camogie Championship semi-final on August 17th following their big victory over a disappointing Wexford side in the quarter-final at Semple Stadium yesterday (Sun 4th August 2002).

Billy Morgan's niece, Emer McDonnell, had 1-1 on the board before Wexford got a chance to settle. Paula Rankin of Wexford knocked over their opening point in the fifth minute, but even by then, Tipp's young tigers were in almost top gear. Two further goals from full-forward Deirdre Hughes and one from Philly Fogarty had the three-in-a-row champions leading comfortably 4-9 to 0-4 at the break.

A hat-trick of goals was completed by Hughes when she sent in her third goal in the opening minute of the second half. Despite the best efforts of Wexford centre-forward Aine Codd and Kate Kelly at midfield, they could not find a way to stop the impressive Tipperary players.

Sixteen year old corner forward Claire Grogan found the Wexford net twice in the second half. With nine minutes left, Aine Codd saw her penalty saved by the Tipp defence, and after that it was plain sailing.

Scorers:
Tipperary: D Hughes 3-2, C Grogan 2-5, E McDonnell 1-3, P Fogarty 1-0, J Ryan, C Gaynor 0-2 each, L Young 0-1.
Wexford: K Kelly 0-7, M O'Leary, P Rankin, A Codd 0-1 each.

Tipperary: J Delaney, P Buffin, U O'Dwyer, C Madden, S Nealon, C Gaynor, S Kelly, E Hayden, A McDermott, P Fogarty, L Young, J Ryan, E McDonnell, D Hughes, C Grogan
Subs: L Ryan for J Delaney, N Kennedy for P Fogarty, S Howard for C Madden

Wexford: M Darcy, C O'Connor, O Heffernan, C O'Loughlin, M Leacy, S Carr, B Holohan, M O'Leary, K Kelly, L Holohan, A Codd, E Quigley, M Kelly, M Hearne, P Rankin.
Subs: A Moran for B Holohan, E Carroll for O Heffernan.

Kilkenny in control

Kilkenny 6-15
Down 0-4

The Kilkenny Cats got plenty of cream as they defeated Down in Saturday's (3rd August 2002) Championship quarter-final in Ballyholland, Co. Down.

Beaten in last year's All-Ireland final, they are a much more focused side this seasonn since the former player Ann Downey took over as Kilkenny manager.

The fact that no less than nine players registered scores on Saturday must have pleased Downey. The Cats got off to a super start with two opening first half goals from Aoife Neary and Catherine Doherty which put them ahead 2-8 to 0-4 at the break. Sadly, Down's Mairin McAleenan, who scored 0-3 in the first half along with Lisa McCrickard, could not find the scoring posts in the second half and thus this half belonged to Kilenny.

Rising Kilkenny star Marie O'Connor and five times All Ireland winner Maring Downey, send the sliothar to the Down net on three occasions with Aoife Neary getting her second goal thus ensuring their semi-final spot.

Scorers:
Kilkenny: A Neary 2-1, M O'Connor 2-0, C Doherty, M Downey 1-2 each, S Millea 0-4, M Costelloe 0-3, E Maher, B Mulally, J Frisby 0-1 each.
Down: M McAleenan 0-3, L McCrickard 0-1

Kilkenny: M Holland, E Kennedy, J Dillon Maher, E Lyng, K Long, F Shore, M Lawlor, E Maher, P Comerford, M Downey, M Costelloe, A Neary, C Doherty, S Millea, J Frisby

Down: T McGowan, R Cunningham, C Mulholland, D Celland, F Carr, P Greene, B Gallagher, J Braniff, M Murray, G Coulter, M McAleenan, T McCrickard, K Fagin, C McGourty, M Gilmore
