Cashman now looks certain to get stamp of approval as Cork boss

CORK should have a new hurling coach in place ahead of Sunday’s Waterford Crystal clash with Clare in Pairc Uí Chaoimh. The name of Tom Cashman is expected to be put before tonight’s County Board for ratification and barring any last minute hitches he is expected to receive the unanimous approval of the clubs.

Cashman has served eight years as an inter county selector, five of them at senior level, and is seen as the likely successor to Jimmy Barry Murphy. The Blackrock man’s appointment would be seen as causing the minimum of disruption at selection committee level, the majority have been there since the All Ireland success of 1999.

However in the unlikely event of the new coach coming from outside the present selection committee, a number of that committee may step down in order to give the new man the freedom to choose the people he wants around him. The Executive of the board are unlikely to prolong the appointment of the new coach any longer than they have to, and it’s confidently expected he will be named tonight.

The full committee should then read, Tom Cashman (Blackrock) coach, Johnny Crowley (Bishopstown), Fred Sheedy (Kilworth), Bertie O´g Murphy (Sarsfields) and Phil Noonan (Newtownshandrum). Trainer Ted Owens (Glen Rovers/St. Nicks).
