THERE are some cracking showdowns in prospect following the draws for next season’s TSB Cork county senior hurling and football championships, which were made at yesterday’s Convention (10/12/00) held at Pairc Ui Chaoimh.

In hurling, defending champions Newtownshandrum, were pitted against St. Finbarr’s, while football kingpins Nemo Rangers were drawn against Clonakilty. There is also the possibility of a first round clash in the hurling championship between famous rivals Glen Rovers and Blackrock. The Glen play St. Catherine’s in a preliminary round with the losers going on to meet the Rockies.

Another first round highlight will be the meeting of east Cork neighbours Erins Own and Sarsfields. Erin’s Own qualified for the final last season, while Sarsfields have been knocking on the door for some years. The losers meet CIT in the second round.

Newly promoted Douglas make their senior championship debut against fellow city club Bishopstown and the losers of this one will have the daunting task of taking on Imokilly in the second round.

Unquestionably the draw of the first round in football will be the meeting of Nemo and Clon with the losers tackling paired against minnows Seandun.ß Youghal, who qualified magnificently for senior status after winning the junior and intermediate championship titles in successive years will make their inaugural appearance in the premier grade against Na Piarsaigh, with the losers facing Aghada or Bantry Blues.

Historic winners of the junior hurling championship Nemo Rangers will face city rivals Na Piarsaigh in the first round of the intermediate championship, while Killavullen, who made the big breakthrough in the junior football, will grace the intermediate stage with a first round appearance against Valley Rovers.

It was an historic occasion for the Cloyne club who had two members, Willie Ring and Jerry O’Sullivan elected to the top table. Mr Ring takes over from Denis Lyons as Culture Officer, while Mr O’Sullivan defeated Brian Lotty of Sarsfields (107 to 87) for the new position of Coaching Officer.
