A day never to be forgotten...
Sunday the 15th of October will go down as probably the greatest day ever in the history of this parish. Pairc Ui Chaoimh was witness to some incredible scences of emotion as Donal Mulcahy lifted the Sean Og Murphy cup to tumultuous applause. One could not write a better script for this for day. It had everthing in terms of passion, courage, excitement and skill. The events leading up to this game were such that a momentum had built up around this team that wasn't going to be stopped. Everybody knew the Mulcahy's would be ready and the team wasn't going leave them down. It was only fitting that Pat Mulcahy received the TSB man of the match award after putting in yet another impeciable display.
The scences of celebration after the match were indescribable as the emotion of the previous week spilled out on to the pitch. This was the stuff that dreams were made of. It was hard to believe that Newtown had won the Senior hurling county final - something that was impossible a few years back had suddenly been achieved. They said that we were too small a place to do it, that we were too young to do it, that the players were too light. On Sunday this team arrived and now they're here to stay. Great credit must go to the players and management who put in a trojan effort all year to make this happen.
After the presentation and interviews, the team and supporters gathered in the Commons Inn for a celebratory drink before the cavalcade home. This was the start to a homecoming never to be forgotten as the huge convoy of cars left Cork and made their presence known through all the towns and villages on the way home. Enormous bonfires greeted their arrival in Newtown and an open top bus was waiting to take the team home on the last leg of the journey down the village. A fantastic crowd greeted the players as the bus made its way to the GAA pavilion and the usual array of speeches was made before everybody headed for Ryan's Bar to continue the celebrations.
