This week, as part of our leadup to the County Final, we caught up with Newtownshandrum captain, Donal Mulcahy.
Donal, some people might say that ye have come a year too early?
"Well if you look at Cork last year, they came out of nowhere and people were saying the same thing about them. When you get to a final as Newtown have, there is no level of expectancy on the team. We are a young team that are going to give it our best shot."
You might say that ye have got the easy side of the draw?
"Maybe we did get the easy side of the draw but you can only play the teams that you are pitted against."
Would I be right in saying that the Avondhu match was the acid test to this young Newtownshandrum team?
"Of course. We knew going into the Avondhu game that we'd be really up against it. Being our home division there was going to be massive interest, but we came good in the last 10 minutes when it really mattered."
Have ye any injury worries in the camp?
"No, we've a clean bill of health. All are flying and raring to go."
Obviously, Erins Own will be favourites for this game. What do you make of team?
"Well what can you say. They have a team littered with inter-county stars. They have the likes of Brian Corcoran and Timmy Kelleher in their ranks. They are particularly strong in the half-back line and half-forward line. I think that'll be where the game will be won and lost."
Thank you Donal for your time and hopefully ye will bring the Sean Og Murphy cup back to Newtown for the first time.
