Newtown drop points to Cloyne

Newtownshandrum 0-08 Cloyne 2-09, March 24 2002 in Cloyne

In poor conditions, Newtownshandrum failed to overcome Cloyne in the Cork Senior hurling league. With three of their players, Ben & Jerry O' Connor and Pat Mulcahy having starred in Cork's win over Offaly less than an hour before this game, it was not surprising to see that Newtown found the conditions tough.

Newtown started brightly and were leading for most of the first half. The heavy pitch did not suit the North Cork men and Cloyne used their physical advantage to score two goals against the run of play.

The game threatened to boil over on numerous occasions after a few "hairy" challenges and it must be said that the referee failed to take control of the game early on.

Newtown were always chasing the game after conceding those goals and were unable to convert their superior stickwork on the scoreboard. Of those to impress, Pat Mulcahy was outstanding at centre-back in spite of being at the end of a few late challenges. Gerard O' Mahony had a good game before having to be substituted after a hand injury, while up front John Paul King and John O' Connor impressed.

Newtownshandrum: Paul Morrissey, Alan O' Brien, Brendan Mulcahy, John McCarthy, Philip Noonan, Pat Mulcahy, Gerard O' Mahony, Alan O' Brien, Declan Murphy, Jerry O' Connor, Mike Morrissey, John Paul King, John O' Connor, Diarmuid Naughton, Ben O' Connor.
