The small ball was at the centre of celebrations in Newtownshandrum last Friday night (13th July 2001) as an excellent book celebrating Newtownshandrum's historic county Championship win in 2000 was launched by Tomas Mulcahy.
It might have been Munster Football final weekend, but thoughts in this remarkable little community were of the more beautiful game, hurling, not just a sport but a religion and a way of life in Newtownshandrum.
Committee memeber Robert Troy began by paying tribute to sponsors Joe Ryan of Ryan's Bar and Chris and John Morrissey of Morrissey's Builders, for their involvement in what is an impeccably professional and beautifully finished publication.
Pictures and stories from the pages of The Corkman and The Irish Examiner combine with the club's own mementoes of a remarkable year for a remarkable club; with that historic county championship complemented by a whopping three in a row at under 21 level.
On the 3rd Sunday in October this small little parish lifted the Sean Og O Murchu Cup and brought it back to the parish, remembering how the dream began with defeat over 1999 County Intermediate champions Ballincollig on a May evening in Mallow
There followed victories over UCC, Avondhu, Muskerry and Erin's Own who were defeated in the final on Sunday October 15th at Pairc Ui Chaoimh on a scoreline of 0-14 to 0-11
Newtownshandrum was deserted that day, and nobody returned until very much later that night when the clubhouse set the scene for unprecedented celebrations

The importance of remembering the occasion is the reason why a committee was formed to put together this booklet, so that people in years to come can relive the memories.
The prospect of this weekend's match with Glen Rovers led to quite a bit of good-natured banter between the locals and Tomas Mulcahy who told those gathered, of a dream he had predicting a 6-19 to 6-18 scoreline in the Glen's favour.
The great former county star and present day TV pundit was held up as an example of exactly how great an ahcievement a Senior Cork County club hurling medal is; he has played in five finals and holds only one county medal.
Looking back on the achievement of Newtownshandrum Tomas noted "the players not alone had discipline on the field, they also had discipline off the field.
And that's when, he continued, you have a team of players who will always answer the call to training and will claim the success they deserve.
Concluding by describing the book as a fantastic piece of work, Tomas humorously expressed the hope, in light of the weekend fixture that he won't be back next year to celebrate another county win by Newtownshandrum.

Club Chairman Mike Morrissey recalled an excellent under 12 game on Newtownshandrum's pitch last weekend, an example of why Newtown shine at senior level and will hopefully, continue to do so.
This book he said, is for those generations of players coming up, and is compiled so that everybody will remember game for game throughout last year, exactly what was achieved.
The successes of 2000 were not, however, Mr Morrissey continued, confined to the senior, or even U21 ranks.
There were great performances also by teams from the parish at under 16, primary school and at camogie championship levels.
Mr Morrissey concluded by paying tribute to the organising committee of Denis O'Mahony, Tom O'Brien, Mary Mulcahy and Josephine Naughton and urged everyone to go out and buy a copy of this special publication.
