Newtown march on to Historic first County Final

Newtownshandrum 1-18 Muskerry 1-14

History was made in Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Sunday when Newtownshandrum recorded a fantastic win over Muskerry to reach their first ever Senior hurling County final. This was a day to remember for the people of Newtown and one cannot underestimate the magnificence of this achievement. Newtown opened brightly and steadily opened up a 7 point lead before Muskerry registered their first score. With the aid of the strong wind, Newtown were able to pick off their scores with deadly efficency and they held a 7 point lead at halftime.

It wasn't too long before Muskerry came charging back into the game after the resumption. The Newtown defence was under consistent pressure in the opening period and their lead was whittled away bit by bit. A Muskerry goal had them right back in it and shortly after they drew level with another point. This was to be a real test of character for the Newtown lads and they responded brillantly. A fine Mike Morrissey point kept them in touch and the score of the game was undoubtedly Jerry O' Connor's goal. It was Jerry himself who started the move with a great pass to John Paul King. JP made a great run and layed off a sweet pass to Jerry who broke through and rifled the ball to the back of the net.

With only seconds remaining in normal time Newtown were leading by 3 points and Muskerry tried everything in their to get a goal. Paul Morrissey brought some heroic saves in goal to rescue Newtown and the win was sealed with a pointed free from Pat Mulcahy, who had an outstanding game throughout. Other players to mention were John Griffin who had a stormer at corner back and John Paul King and Mike Morrissey who both put in sterling efforts. Ben and Jerry were excellent as always contributing a healthy portion of the final scoreline.
