Preview of Newtownshandrum V Seandun
By John O'Mullane
Newtown and Seandun meet in the 2nd round of the Senior Hurling Championship next Saturday 16th June 2001 in Kildorrery, throw in 8pm.
Senadun go into this game as somewhat of an unknown quantity. Having lost the services of the Douglas contingent (2000 Intermediate Champions), one would expect Seandun to struggle in this company, but with Nemo Rangers winning the Junior equivalent last year, and teams like St. Vincent’s making a bold bid for Intermediate honours this year, the city divisional side will go into the game full of confidence of causing an upset.
Newtown’s forms this year has been mediocre to say the least. Having drawn their first four league games, they entered into their first round game against St. Finbarrs more in hope than expectation, missing a number of key players through injury and suspension. In the end they were completely overran by a more fit and hungrier Barrs team on the night.
Questions were asked after that game where the Newtown lads had lost their appetite for success, having won so much over the last few years. However sources within the Newtown camp have indicated a vast improvement in training since the Barrs game so will those questions be answered on Saturday night ? The return of Pat Mulcahy, John McCarthy and Declan Murphy to the team should strengthen things up considerably, coupled with the return of the county players to full training, bodes well for Newtown’s chances.
I think we can expect to see a different Newtown in action this Saturday. The fact that they got a wake-up call this year from the Barrs without elimination from the championship, I don’t expect then to slip up on this banana skin.
