Newtownshandrum cruise through to third round

Newtownshandrum 2-15 Seandun 0-6

Newtown got back on their winning ways against Seandun in Kildorrery on Saturday 16th June 2001. After falling at the first hurdle against St. Finbarrs, the North Cork men made no mistake tonight in securing their passage to the third round of the Senior Hurling Championship.

On a greasy surface Newtown opened brightly with a great point from Alan O'Brien from an acute angle. After a scrappy first few minutes Newtown quickly settled and it became obvious that Newtown were the better balanced side. Ben and Jerry O'Connor were in splendid form and their slick stickwork was too much for the city division. Just before half time Ben scored an opportunistic goal leaving the scoreline at half time Newtownshandrum 1-6 to Seandun's 0-2.

Wet conditions throughout the game made playing conditions difficult. Newtown got off to a great start in the second half. Points from John Paul King, Declan Murphy, Ben and Jerry O'Connor ensured Newtown's victory. Seandun tried very hard to get into the game, but some strong defending by Gerard O'Mahony, John Griffin and John McCarthy denied them certain scores.

Newtown will now meet Glen Rovers in the next round of championship on 21st July 2001.
