Newtownshandrum V's St. Finbarrs
by John O' Mullane
Defending Champions Newtownshandrum head for Mallow next
Sunday 6th May for a 7:15 throw in, in defence of the title they won in such
dramatic circumstance last year. Normally this would be a big day for the club,
but unfortunately events over the past few weeks have overshadowed this game.
The sudden death of Ann King, mother of John Paul King along with the suspension
of Pat Mulcahy and the long term injury to Michael Morrissey, has severely
hampered preparations for this game. If that wasn’t bad enough 5 of last years
Panel have retired, most notable being John McCarthy and Declan Murphy.
For two of the team, Gerard O’Mahony and John O’Connor this will be their second game of the day. They must first play for Cork Vocationals in Limerick in the All Ireland Vocationals Schools final before rushing off to Mallow for their club game, hardly ideal preparations.
St. Finbarrs have a wealth of talent
available to them. With the like of Cathal McCarthy, Brian Cunningham,
Michael Ryan and the evergreen
Ger Cunningham still playing as good as ever, they will go
into this game as warm favourites.
It’s going to be a huge task for
the lads to come out of this game and I think we can be thankful for the
back Door system in Place in this years championship, which will see up
pitted against Seandun in the second round should we be beaten next Sunday.
At this time we must send our
deepest condolence to the King family following their loss.
