Newtownshandrum claim first Senior League Camogie Title

Newtownshandrum
Fr. O'Neills
2-13
1-13

Newtownshandrum collected their first ever Cork Senior League title after winning the 1998 League Final at Delaneys on Monday, 24th April, 2000. The first half was a close encounter and Paula O'Connor's goal five minutes from half-time saw Newtownshandrum lead at the interval by the narrowest of margins 1-7 to 1-6.

But, O'Neills got themselves back in front within minutes of the re-start following points scored by Mags Finn and Fiona O'Driscoll. Inspired by senior inter-county star Paula O'Connor, Newtownshandrum quickly reduced the deficit and were back on level terms inside four minutes.

Newtown gained the uppper hand after and O'Connor point and goal but O'Neill's rallied again and just a goal seperated the sides going into the last ten minutes. Fiona O'Driscoll knocked over three unanswered scores to level but Newtownshandrum, with Aine Kelleher and Paula O'Connor in inspirational form pointed twice double to edge it.

O'Neills came close to snatching victory from the jaws of defeat when O'Driscoll struck the upright in the closing minutes of what was a superb contest throughout.
